Paddling for a Purpose

For Caroline Dawson, the River Dee isn’t just a waterway—it’s a lifelong companion. Growing up amidst the natural beauty of rural North East Wales, her connection to the river ran deep, from childhood swims in its tributaries to her role as the first female Trustee of the Welsh Dee Trust in 2022. That connection, coupled with her Environmental Science degree and a career in sustainable practices within the Agri-Food industry, laid the foundation for something extraordinary: SUP Lass Paddle Adventures (SLPA).

As the Director and Founder of SLPA, Caroline has turned her passion for environmental stewardship into a thriving paddle-boarding business with a mission. SLPA isn’t just about experiencing the river—it’s about protecting it. Over the past four years, SLPA has been at the forefront of community-driven initiatives that inspire others to safeguard the waterways they love.

Paddling Toward Change: SLPA’s Recent Initiatives:

1. Championing Community Engagement with the Welsh Dee Trust

SLPA’s collaboration with the Welsh Dee Trust is more than a partnership—it’s a shared mission. Whether at open days or through powerful storytelling on social media, SLPA has become a voice for the river. At the 2024 event, Caroline spotlighted their SUP river cleans and the #itshouldntbeinthedee campaign, rallying the community to keep the Dee free from litter.

2. Paddleboarding River Cleans

Armed with paddleboards and determination, SLPA has led volunteer river cleans since 2022. These events transform paddlers into stewards, fostering camaraderie and leaving the river healthier with every trip.

3. Combating Invasive Species

In partnership with the North East Wales Wildlife Trust, SLPA has distributed over 40 invasive species kits to paddlers, empowering them to identify and report harmful species like Himalayan Balsam and Mitten Crabs.

4. Exploring Dark Skies by Paddle

SLPA partnered with the Clwydian Range AONB team to offer Dark Skies Paddle Events, inviting participants to experience the tranquillity of the river at night while learning about the importance of preserving dark skies for wildlife.

5. Living by Leave No Trace

Every SLPA adventure upholds the Leave No Trace principles, ensuring the River Dee remains pristine for future generations of paddlers and wildlife alike.

6. Becoming a Wildlife Safe Operator

As a certified Wildlife Safe Operator and part of the WISE-accredited scheme, SLPA leads by example, ensuring their operations protect the creatures that call the river home.

Paddling with Purpose: Sustainability at the Core

SLPA’s approach to business mirrors their environmental ethos: quality, community, and sustainability come first. Instead of chasing trends, they invest in durable gear designed to last, reducing waste and promoting mindful consumption. They also prioritize sourcing locally, from food and drink to clothing and printing, boosting the regional economy and supporting fellow small businesses.
